Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media (IIJNM) was established in January 2001. IIJNM is located in Bangalore and spreads across 5 acres of landscaped grounds bounded by rolling hills. The institute was founded by the BS & G Foundation, which is a non-profit Trust committed to supporting democratic values and institutions in India. The curriculum at Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media combines theory and practical sessions to prepare its students for leading positions in the media industry. The Indian Institute of Journalism & New Media (IIJNM) is one of South Asia's leading post-graduate schools of journalism and media. Located in Bangalore in the heart of India's high-tech industry, the institute offers an excellent curriculum that combines both theory and practice to prepare its graduates for positions in the media industry. January 2001 marked the opening of the institute. IIJNM is founded by the BS&G Foundation, partnership between the Adi Chunchanagiri Maha Samsthana Trust and The George Foundation (see www.tgfworld.org). The main motivating factor behind the creation of this journalism college is the overwhelming need to improve the quality of journalism and elevate the stature of the profession in India.
The Institute's mission is to educate students in a broad range of skills and concepts involving the gathering, editing and presentation of information, and prepare them for a career in journalism. While there is a strong emphasis on the "craft" of journalism, the curriculum is designed to help students draw on and supplement their basic education so they are better equipped to handle intelligently the fundamental issues of the day. They will be exposed to the principles and ethics intrinsic to the profession, to enable them to hone their journalistic skills. The hope is that IIJNM journalists will not only be competent practitioners by today's standards, but also that they will help raise those standards.
