The Karnataka State Open University is the 8th Open University to be established in India and has come up as a result of the country's long and rich experience in the field of distance education. The university actually evolved from the Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Education of the University of Mysore. Karnataka State Open University is situated in an area of 15 acres along the Mysore-Mangalore highway, in the Manasagangotri campus of the University of Mysore, in Mysore city. It is about 5 km. from the city centre and has an atmosphere ideally suited for academic pursuits. The university headquarters houses the administrative offices, the academic block, lecture halls, a well-equipped library, a few cottages for students coming to Mysore for examinations and contact programmes, and all the necessary amenities such as post-office, bank and canteen.
