Jharkhand state houses some of the best colleges of the country like XLRI Jamshedpur, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ranchi, Indian Institute of Mines Dhanbad (changed to IIT now) and Birla Institute of Technology Mesra.

St.Columba's College, Hazaribagh is the oldest college in the state established in 1859 by the Dublin University Mission. In Jharkhand there are - one central university, seven state universities, two deemed universities and two private universities.

IIT Dhanbad started as an institute which focused on mines and later on became a full-fledged technical institution and was named IIT Dhanbad. The institution offers programmes like B. Tech., M. Tech., M. Sc. Tech., and even an MBA. BIT Sindri is one of the best engineering college run by Jharkhand Government. Central University of Jharkhand is the only Central University in the state.

Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) or Xavier School of Management was established in 1949 and is ranked among the top business schools of the country.

Some of the Premier MBA colleges in Jharkhand are Xavier Labour Relations Institute, Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra; IIM Ranchi-Indian Institute of Management, Indian School Of Mines - Dept Of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Science and Management - Jharkhand, Xavier's Institute of Social Service, Ranchi.
