About Indian Maritime University (IMU), Visakhapatnam
The IMU Visakhapatnam Campus emerges from the confluence of the centrally established Indian Maritime University at Chennai, and India's premier ship design and maritime research institution, the National Ship Design and Research Centre. Pioneered in the early 90's by the Government of India to pilot and consolidate national domain knowledge with a global vision, NSDRC has undertaken several milestone projects in the areas of Ship Design, Construction and Applied Research.
Therefore, IMU Visakhapatnam Campus heralds the integration of visionary academic insight with the accumulated professional expertise and knowledge base on Ship Design and Maritime Technology. Presently Visakhapatnam Campus is located in the former NSDRC Office and residential complex on a 5-acre property located on the main road connecting Naval Base and Scindia junction (Hindustan Shipyard) on one side and HPCL and Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on the other side.
The School of Maritime Management offers a two-year full-time unique MBA Programme in Port & Shipping Management and International Transportation & Logistics Management. School of Nautical Studies conducts three programmes as per the following details: a) Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc. (Nautical Science), and b) 3 Year B.Sc. Degree Course in Nautical Science. c) 3 Year Polyvalent (Dual Certification) course leading to B.Sc. (Maritime Science). School of Marine Engineering and Technology trains for bachelor's degree in Engineering (B.E.) in Marine Engineering. The School of Naval Architecture runs both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes orienting the students for design and construction of marine crafts and structures.
The Library of the National Ship Design and Research Organization, Visakhapatnam, was established in 1991 and renamed as Indian Maritime University Library, Visakhapatnam Campus, on 1st April 2009. This is regarded as one of the best Maritime Libraries in India. The noise and vibration lab was set up for training graduate students to have the actual physical feel of the theoretical understanding.
