The Department of Physics was created in 1972 with appointment of two lecturers. It was catering to the needs of Chemistry and Biology departments from 1972-1979. The teaching programme of the department started at the level of B.Sc. (Honours School) in 1979 and M.Sc. (Honours School) in 1982. Now the Department of Physics offers courses leading to the degrees of B.Sc. (Honours School), M.Sc. (Honours School), M.Sc.(Honours), M.Phil and Ph.D programmes.
