Tezpur College, one of the premier colleges of Assam, came in to existence in the year 1965 due to untiring efforts of Late Dulal Chandra Bhattacharjee, a doyen of teaching and legal community of Assam .He was also the founder president of the college. Started as an evening college for the benefit of poor students and housed in Tezpur Academy, the College was later shifted to the present site on the flank of the famous picturesque hillock of Agnigarh in 1968.

Nalbari College was established in the year 1945 and was affiliated to the Calcutta University. After the establishment of the Gauhati University in 1948 it came under this University.
