The College started as Kalahandi Science College from 18th July 1960 continued as a Pvt. College till 30.11.1961 was taken over by the Government of Orissa on 1.12.1961. It was then renamed as Govt. Science College, Bhawanipatna. With its vertical academic growth the College was conferred with Autonomous Status in 2002 and now it has added a new feather to its cap – the status of “College with Potential for Excellence”. In 2005 the College was accredited by NAAC with Grade "B++".

Located on a sprawling 50 acre campus, Government Autonomous College, Rourkela maintains its reputation as a premier college under Sambalpur University. At the time of its inception in 1961 it was located in a small building in the sector area of the Steel Township and it was then named Government Science College, Rourkela.
