Since the opening session 1948-49, the college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta in English, Bengali, Sanskrit, History, Logic, Civics, Commercial Geography, Commercial Arithmetic, Elements of Book Keeping to I.A. standard and organizers were motivated to introduce I.Sc. course from the very next session. From the very beginning of the Commerce department was run in the evening in the interest of the otherwise employed students.

Slc_collegepht01outhfield College was founded as Loreto College in Southfield, Darjeeling in August 1961 as a women's college. At the request of the Government of West Bengal, the Irish Branch of the Instutute of The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Darjeeling Loreto Educational Society agreed to take care of its management. However, due to the lack of personnel the Loreto Nuns were compelled to hand over the College to the Government of West Bengal, hence to be run as Southfield College.

Uluberia college owes its existence to the selfless and untiring service of the Founder-Principal Late Haripada Ghosal along with generous donations from the local people. Established in 1948 as a humble institution, the college has now developed to cater to more than four thousand students of diverse communities and backgrounds.
