Since its inception in 1964, it has been wholeheartedly dedicated to cater to the requirements of the poor and the needy students of the district. For the first two decades following its establishment, the college imparted education in the Arts Stream only.

Mangaldai College, was established in 20th September 1951 is a premier institution of higher education in Darrang District. The Colllege is is situated on the edge of Mangaldai town by the side of NH 52. The college is affiliated to Gauhati University and is recognized under the UGC Registration Act 1950 of section 2f and 12B and is under provincialised category.

The fourth oldest college of undivided Assam, Madhab Choudhury College (M.C.College), Barpeta was established in 1939 in pre-independent India when the entire nation rose united against the colonial rule. LCB College was founded in 1971 as a night college by a group of teachers and operated from the premises of Maligaon Railway Higher Secondary School. At the initial stage it catered mostly to undergraduate working men and women.

Kharupetia College is situated in Kharupetia of Assam. This is a fast developing commercial area under Darrang District. The college was established in 1981. It is granted from the Govt. of Assam. It is affiliated to Gauhati University and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

One of the veritable nerve centres of women's education in north-eastern India, Handique Girls' College was established in 1939, a dream come true for the late Mrs. Rajabala Das, a pioneer in the field of women's education. The patronage and philanthropy of the late Radha Kanta Handique were also largely responsible for giving shape to the first institution for higher education for women, in the undivided state of Assam. Mrs. Rajabala Das also became the founder principal of the college.

Dispur College was established in 1978, with classes being held at Gopal Boro Govt. Higher Secondary School in the evening shift with arts faculty only. The founder principal was Sri Ghana Kanta Chetia Phukan. The college came into existence to meet the growing demand for higher education due to the shifting of the capital of Assam from Shillong to Dispur.

Chhaygaon College is situated in Chhaygaon in the Kamrup District of Assam.The Chhaygaon College established in the year 1974 is the most important educational institution in the greater Chhaygaon , the home land of heterogenous racial elements and an economically backward rural area of South Kamrup.

Barama College, Baksa was established in 1971. A co-educational institution, it started initially with one year pre-university program in Arts. Two years later I.e. in 1973 the College was shifted to its present permanent site and Bachelor of Art program was introduce to synchronize the development of the stream. Barama College came under deficit system in 1978 and now is managed by Governing Body.
