Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya, Port Blair is the premier Institution in the Union Territory of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands which had its inception in 1967 as Govt. College Port Blair. The College offers instructions in wide-ranging disciplines at Undergraduate and postgraduate levels leading to B.A, B.Sc, B.Com., BCA and BBA(Tourism & Travel Mgt.) degrees and M.Sc., M.A and M.Com degrees respectively.

The year 1987 is a momentous one in the annals of Tiruchendur Taluk for it witnessed the rise of a college for women in Tiruchendur. The college owes its origin solely on the philanthrophy of Dr.B.Sivanthi Adityan, the illustrious son of a noble father Mr.Si.Pa.Aditanar. The College started as Kalahandi Science College from 18th July 1960 continued as a Pvt. College till 30.11.1961 was taken over by the Government of Orissa on 1.12.1961. It was then renamed as Govt. Science College, Bhawanipatna. With its vertical academic growth the College was conferred with Autonomous Status in 2002 and now it has added a new feather to its cap – the status of "College with Potential for Excellence". In 2017 the College is accredited by NAAC with Grade "B+".

The beginning of formal education in these islands started by making few young convicts from among the penal settlement of 1858 to conversant with English. Later these young convicts were trained for fundamental skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing by the British authorities.
