About Tagore Government College of Education TGCE, Port Blair

The beginning of formal education in these islands started by making few young convicts from among the penal settlement of 1858 to conversant with English. Later these young convicts were trained for fundamental skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing by the British authorities.
The first school was started in a hut and later shifted to a double-storied building situated at the site of the present D.C. Office. The school won popularity and by the year 1900 the local Administration had to open 6 new Primary Schools. The progress in the field of education was checked temporarily with the Japanese occupation of these islands in 1942.
In the first year of Country’s Independence (1947-48) the first Govt. Boys’ High School at Port Blair was started along with 8 Primary Schools in the adjoining villages. There was one Middle School at Car Nicobar in the Nicobar Group of Islands.
The increase in number of the Primary Schools was rapid as compared to availability of trained teachers. So, the Administration had to open Teachers’ Training School at Port Blair in August 1958. As these islands are cut off and far away, good and qualified graduate and post graduate teachers could not be attracted to these islands. In order to meet the growing demand of such trained teachers in these islands, the A&N Administration, with the recognition of UGC and affiliation of Panjab University came forward to start a College to provide the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree in the academic year 1981-82.
