The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (Bengali: ইন্ডিয়ান ইনস্টিটিউট অফ টেকনোলজি, খড়গপুর) (commonly known as IIT Kharagpur or IIT KGP) is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute of higher education established by the Government of India in 1951. The first of the fifteen IITs to be established, it is officially recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India and is regarded as one of the best engineering institutions in India.

The School of Information Technology has been started with the objective of promoting research and development, industrial consultancy, and teaching in the frontier areas of Information Technology. The School currently offers MTech, M.S. and Ph.D. programmes. The School also conducts the PGDIT (Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology) programme in the distance mode at Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and Kharagpur to facilitate cross migration to the field of IT.
