Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology, Guwahati campus was founded on 7 September 2006 as the first non-governmental engineering institute in Assam under the patronage of the Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society. IIITG is one of the 20 IIITs being set up by the Central Govt. in NPPP (not-for-profit public private partnership) mode. IIITG started operations in August 2013. There are now three UG batches with a total strength of 179 students, and with 7 PhD students, there are 186 students in the Institute.

The Gauhati University Institute of Science and Technology GUIST was set up at the university campus in 2009 to enhance quality and innovation in Technology and Applied Science education.
