IIITG is one of the 20 IIITs being set up by the Central Govt. in NPPP (not-for-profit public private partnership) mode. IIITG started operations in August 2013. There are now three UG batches with a total strength of 179 students, and with 7 PhD students, there are 186 students in the Institute.
IIITG is operating from temporary premises in the Assam Textile Institute Campus at the heart of the city. There are two 8 Mbps Internet links. A 100 Mbps NKN link is under implementation. Students and most of the faculty are staying in a flat complex where a number of flats have been taken on rent by the Institute. The flat complex is connected to the Institute by a wireless link and there is a wi-fi network in the flat complex.
