Established in the year 1986, It was initially housed in Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School Baramulla located adjacent to the present campus area. The college is spread over an area of 37 kanals of land. It started its academic venture with a meager number of students in Arts & Commerce and was later on shifted to its own campus in the year 1995. Subsequently, Science stream and Computer Sciences were introduced in 2002 & 2005 respectively.

Govt. Degree College, Sopore was founded initially as in intermediate college in 1951 and was upgraded as a degree college in 1963. It is the biggest co-educational institution in the valley of Kashmir. The college is situated 55 Kms. away north of Srinagar in semi-urban town of Sopore commonly called an ‘Apple Town’. The college possesses an area of 14 acres and now is sandwiched from all sides by human habitation.

The foundation stone of the college was laid in the year 2005 by Hon’ble Minister for Education, J&K Government Late Dr. Ghulam Nabi Lone at Nowpora Kalan, Sopore under the PM’s reconstruction programme. The academic session started in 2006 in a building provided by Government Degree College for boys Sopore. Later in the year 2010 the college was shifted to the actual campus at Nowpora Kallan which is spread over an area of 106 Kanals, in a lush green environment and peaceful area.

Government Degree College, Sumbal was established in the year 2010. The foundation stone was laid by Hon'ble Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah on 7 July 2011 and the inaugration was done by Hon'ble Minister for Education, Mr. Akbar Lone on 19 Oct 2014. Classwork in the college started with the first principal of the college being Prof. Anjli Razdan.
