The history of the Chengalpattu Medical College dates back to days before 1965 when this was a District Head Quarters hospital with its building in the town. In 1965, the Government of Tamil Nadu upgraded this District Headquarters hospital as a teaching institution with 250 beds for clinical training. Vedachalam Mudaliar, the then Chairman of Chengalpattu Municipality, donated a vast area, which is in pocession of this institution.

In the year 2001 Thiru Puratchi Kalaignar Vijaykant founded Shri Andal Alagar college of Engineering (SAACE) in memory of his parents at Mamandur near Chengalpet.

SRM Institute of Management Studies became functional in 1993 as a part of SRM Engineering College. The institute, named after Sri Ramaswamy, the father of Sri T.R. It started as “Lady Willigdon” leprosy sanatorium under contribution from the church of Scotland Mission in 1924 and was taken over first by the Government of Madras in 1948 and then by the Government of India in 1955.
