XAT Syllabus

XLRI does not issue an official, fixed topic list for the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT). However, based on paper patterns and historical trends, the XAT 2027 syllabus is divided into four main sections across two time-bound test parts:

Part 1: Core Test (170 Minutes Total)

1. Decision Making (DM) — ~21 Questions

Unique to XAT, this section evaluates real-world managerial judgment and analytical decision-making.

  • Business & Managerial Caselets: Product pricing, Gen Z vs. senior dynamics, HR conflicts, and resource allocation dilemmas.
  • Ethical Dilemmas: Workplace ethics vs. profitability, transparency, and corporate social responsibility.
  • Situational Judgement: Prioritization, stakeholder conflict resolution, and decision-making under constraints.
  • Analytical Reasoning Sets: Grouping logic and quantitative/data-driven decision sets.

2. Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning (VALR) — ~26 Questions

Tests English comprehension, critical thinking, and structural logic.

  • Reading Comprehension: Passages on philosophy, economics, abstract social issues, plus Poetry Comprehension (unique to XAT).
  • Critical Reasoning: Strong vs. weak arguments, statement-assumption, statement-conclusion, and fact-inference-judgement (FIJ).
  • Verbal Ability: Para Jumbles, sentence completion, analogies, figures of speech, idioms, and contextual grammar.

3. Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QA & DI) — ~28 Questions

Requires strong mathematical application and calculation speed (no onscreen calculator allowed).

  • Arithmetic: Percentages, profit & loss, TSD, time & work, ratios, interest, and mixtures.
  • Algebra: Functions, logarithms, progressions (AP/GP), quadratic & linear equations, and inequalities.
  • Geometry & Mensuration: Triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, coordinate geometry, lines, and 2D/3D shapes.
  • Modern Math & Trignometry: Permutations & combinations, probability, set theory, trigonometry, and basic statistics.
  • Data Interpretation: Tables, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, and complex caselets.

Part 2: General Knowledge (10 Minutes)

General Knowledge (GK) — ~20 Questions

(Note: Marks in this section do not count toward your overall percentile for shortlisting, but are evaluated during the final selection process).

  • Current Affairs: Business & economy news, national/international events, sports, and government policies.
  • Static GK: History, Indian Constitution & polity, geography, corporate M&A, awards, and science & technology.

Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT)

Xavier Admission Test (XAT) is a national-level entrance exam, for admission into the postgraduate management programs at Xavier Institutes, conducted by Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI), Jamshedpur. Besides XLRI and other Xavier Institutes, hosts of other reputed Top B-Schools in India also accept XAT scores including Loyola Institute of Business Administration, Chennai and Goa Institutes of Management, Indian Institute of Finance, New Delhi and S P Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai.
