About IKSV Khairagarh

In 1956, King Birendra Bahadur Singh and Queen Padmavati Devi, the then King and Queen of the small princely state of Khairagarh, donated their palace to open a university of music, dance, and visual arts. The university was named after their deceased daughter Indira Devi who died young and was fond of music. It was run under the Government of Madhya Pradesh until the creation of Chhattisgarh. It is Asia’s first musical university.

Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalay (IKSV), Khairagarh, Chhattisgarh was established in 1956. IKSV is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Any student or scholar from any part of the WORLD can come & stay at the University campus for study or research. The oldest & priceless classical recitals are kept in the Listening Room of the University with utmost care. Students & Scholars of Music, Musicians, Musicologists, Art Critics, Music Promoters & Actor/Actress make their presence in the campus to acquit the latest and the best in Indian Classical Music, Indian Classical Dance, Visual Arts, Literature & Theatre. The university is accredited by NAAC with Grade – A (Grade Point 3.11)

The university has a collection of more than 40,000 books and a good number of audiotapes, CDs and video slides of Indian masters of Painting. The university also has a collection of works of the contemporary master painters of India, folk and tribal artists of different regions. It has a mini musical instrument gallery having a collection of classical and folk musical instruments. There is a mini archaeological museum with a collection of regional archaeological art collections and documentation. The university provides hostel facilities to both the male and female students. Accommodations are available for overseas students as well. All teaching instructions will be provided in English for the foreign students.

University collaborates with the village community to organize short term courses run by the Lifelong Learning Department of the University. Our N.S.S Unit regularly organizes Ten Day Camp with the active help of the Sarpanch and Village Secretary of the adopted village. Short term training programs of Painting, Music, and other vocational courses are organized to tone up the existing skills of the villagers. University also shares knowledge base and information with the village artisans on commercialization of their vocations, importance of knowledge sharing, dissemination, the importance of education, sanitation, and other socio, cultural and economical aspects.
