The full- fledged department of Ancient Indian History, Culture &Archaeology was established in Dr. H. S. Gour Vishwavidyalaya of Sagar in the year 1958. This department has a significant place in the field of archaeology. Several new sites have been excavated and explored by this department . The archaeological excavations were conducted at Eran, Tripuri, Tumain, Malhar, Nandur, Bhimbaithka and Ghodamada and their results have added welcome contribution in the history and culture of Madhya Pradesh.
This department is well equipped with a museum known as Harisingh Gour Archaeological Museum. It has a rare collection of sculptures and antiquities.The Museum is named in the memory of Dr. Hari Singh Gour, the founder of Sagar University.This department is successfully running the courses of B. A., M. A., M. Phil. and Ph. D. at present under the expert guidance of faculty.
