he new curriculum has been in operation for a year. The courses were conceptualized at the University level in response to the demands of society, the changing profile of our students and the recent trends in higher education in general and home science in particular. The new course was prepared after careful review, revision and recontextualisation of the syllabus in the five streams, Food and Nutrition, Resource Management, Human Development, Fabric and Apparel Sciences and Communication and Extension. The goal of Home Science is to address issues of human development and its relation to the environment. The revised curriculum provides students full opportunity to study value-oriented, culturally relevant, professional courses. The first year student will be exposed to the core areas of Home Science from the start. In this manner, a student will be able to imbibe the essence of the academic discipline at the outset. Supportive courses in the social sciences will be provided to enhance the students' understanding.
In the second year, the student proceeds further into the areas of Home Science and supports that learning with courses in biological and physical sciences, customised to meet the needs of the Home Science curriculum. In the second year for honours and in the third year, for pass course she will have a choice to select an area of specialisation. Well-supported with carefully planned practical courses, the new curriculum has launched a contemporary outlook and fresh perspective to the study of Home Science; in addition to a job-oriented and professional approach to learning.
