The Department has developed certain short cut methods based on chemical composition, in vitro and in vivo digestibility of forages to predict their nutritional quality. The chemical techniques modified and standardized amply revealed that a lesser (20%) concentration of NaOH in micro-Kjeldahls distillation for crude protein (6 to 26%) determination of feeds/forages is adequate. By the methods developed by the Department forages could be economically evaluated for their nutritional qualities. Detergent system of analysis has been modified, which is more suitable for selecting better forage varieties in the final forage evaluation program. By keeping the adaptation period constant at 10 days, nutrient digestibility and nutritive value index of Indian forages can be accurately determined on six animals with fecal collection period of seven days.

A technique for making berseem hay without loss of leaves has been developed. Toasting process which helped to destroy undesirable components of raw guar meal enabled in significantly lowering high mortality and enhancing growth in poultry. The inclusion of Lucerne meal (5 or 10%) in the diet of growing pigs led to significantly higher average daily gain.

The culturing techniques for different physiological groups/ classes of anaerobes were standardized and adopted for their enumeration and characterization between cattle and buffaloes nutrition. Ruminal gas monitoring technique using pressure transducer was standardized for batch and continuous culturing of anaerobic fungi from cattle and buffalo to discern fermentation kinetics of tropical feeds.
