Background, academic mission, and departmental profile
The department of Pathology was established in the year 1987 with undergraduate course. The department was recognised for postgraduate courses in the year 1996. Total number of teaching faculty is 26, of which 5 are Professors and recognized PG teachers, 2 are Associate professors, 5 Assistant professors and 28 tutors., 4 are PhD guides.Total number of non teaching staff is 42. The intake of MBBS seats is 150 and for post graduate courses; 5 MD & 2 DCP, 2 PhD seats. The department also runs BSc MLT and Histotechnology technician course.
The department is equipped with CCTV network with 6 televisions for undergraduate practicals, multihead teaching microscope for PGs. Various academic activities conducted are Quiz contests, Structured tutorials & Objective Structured Practical Examination” (OSPE). We are proud to have an unique stone museum having named after one of the eminent pathologists of the country Late.Dr.S.J.Nagalotimath.
Department was fortunate enough to have Dr,S.J.Nagalotimath from 1991 to 1993 at the helm of the affairs. From 1993 to 2000, the department was successfully headed by Dr. S. S. Jigjini who went on to become Principal (From 2000 to 2004) and was honoured with the responsibility of the first Vice-Chancellor of BLDE University Bijapur.
Presently the responsibility of heading the department is being ably carried out by Dr. B.R.Yelikar with the help of dedicated & cordial staff. As a result the department is active in research activities & publications & has more than 70 publications in national & international journals to its credit. Totally 33 research projects are under various stages of completion. The department encourages the undergraduates to undertake ICMR -STS Projects.
