The teaching of Nematology was first initiated in Post Graduate Programme in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology and in the Department of Zoology and Entomology in 1971. Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi developed a project entitled, "All India Coordinated Research Project on Nematodes Pests of crops and their control", which was initially funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India for a period of two years. Out of ten centres in the country, the Assam Agricultural University was selected as one of the centres in the year 1977.
