Sri Chitturi Indiraiah Memorial Government College was established in Tanuku in the year 1968 with the untiring efforts of Sri Chitturi Venkateswara Rao , the chief donor, who donated in the name of his illustrious late father Sri Chitturi Indraiah. The elite of the town also left no stone unturned in making the dream of establishing a Government College in Tanuku into a reality. In the beginning this Government College offered both intermediate and degree courses. Being a Government Educational institution, various categories of students such as economically backward, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, backward classes join this college to pursue higher studies. Since its establishment the college has been catering to the educational needs of Tanuku and its neighbouring villages.

During 1996, the college was bifurcated and as a result separate degree and junior colleges have come into existence. With dedicated principals and staff all along these years the college produced a good number of doctors, engineers, postgraduates and thousands of graduates. The college is known for its high standards and strict discipline. The college is also providing services as a District Coordinating center for all the government and Private Aided Degree Colleges in West Godavari District in academic and administrative matters. Keeping in view the changing trends in higher education and various opportunities for employment oriented restructured courses were introduced. Now the college offers instruction in conventional restructured and vocational courses including subjects like Computers and Industrial Chemistry. Thus, this college is an educational institution with distinctive characteristics.

This is an educational institution with 39 years of standing. The faculty are very keen on bringing quality improvement. As an Identified College of the District, the college has become the centre of the Government activity in the district and also the venue for all the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

The students, staff and principal of the college impressed upon the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Andhra Pradesh for permitting them to take the college for assessment by NAAC. The college was accredited at B+ grade in the year 2005 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore in the year 2005.

About Computer Laboratory
The college has a computer laboratory with 31 computers. The laboratory is kept open for students even after college hours. The staff members have access to utilize the computers during the holidays also. Some departments are also equipped with computer facilities. The Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Govt. of AP., Hyderabad is making arrangements for establishing a language laboratory.
