The West Bengal University of Health Sciences has been set up by an Act of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly for better management of the health and medical education related courses which were so far taught separately by the University of Calcutta, and the Universities of Burdwan and North Bengal. All the courses have been brought under one umbrella for helping in upgrading the level of teaching in the state. The very need for the formation of such a separate university by disaffiliating medical colleges from the respective university faculties of medicine was and is looked upon by a section of the medical community as unnecessary.An undemocratic feature of the new university is that unlike the other universities ( University of Calcutta , etc.), the highest decision making body of the university has a majority of nominated members, hence making university decisions effectively a rubberstamp of government policies.
