The Indian Law Society was established in 1923 as a Public Charitable Trust registered under the Societies Registration Act. The Indian Law Society established the Law College in 1924, which has since then established itself as a premier institute for legal studies in India. In 2004, the ILS Law College was accredited the A+ level by NAAC.
Set amidst a sprawling green campus in the heart of Pune, it offers students a holistic environment that encourages exposure to social, cultural, and physical activities that complement the top-of-the-class legal education imparted by the college.
The Indian Law Society, was founded on 4th March, 1923, as a result of the pioneering efforts of several legal luminaries. One of the founding members was the late Principal J.R.Gharpure, member of the Hindu Law Committee and the Legal Education Committee, Bombay.
"The Society has set before itself a double object, to provide schools and colleges where the law may be studied as required by the curricula of the Universities and the High Courts on a scientific basis; and secondly for spreading a general knowledge of the law and constitution among the people." - Principal J.R. Three Chief Justices of India and a number of Chief Justices and Justices of the High Courts as well as Governors and Jurists belong to the alumni of the College. Some of the students have gone abroad to well known Universities in the U.K. and the U.S.
In pursuance of ILS Society's objective of providing facilities for the study of Law on a scientific basis, the ILS Law College was established in 1924 and affiliated to the University of Bombay. With the establishment of the University of Pune in 1949, the college was affiliated to it and today it is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Pune. ILS Law College is also one of the first colleges to start legal education in its true sense.
