Four dedicated school teachers founded Nutan Marathi Primary School in 1883.Subsequently Shikshan Prasarak Mandali was founded in 1888. The aim of Shikshan Prasarak Mandali was to provide education in vernacular language and to inculcate the spirit of Nationalism among the society. The college was established on 14th June, 1916 and was then called the New Poona College.In June, 1928 the Raja Saheb of Jamkhindi state donated a handsome amount of Rs. Two Lakhs in the memory of his father, Sir Parashurambhau Patwardhan. Then the college was renamed as Sir Parashurambhau College. The college now imparts education in Arts, Science and Commerce with Post-graduate centres in Chemistry, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, Commerce, Political Science and Computer Science.
The Shikshan Prasarak Mandali is a premier society in this part of the country and runs Primary Schools, High Schools, Colleges and other Educational Institutes in Pune, Mumbai, Solapur and Chiplun. Sir Parashurambhau College is one of the leading colleges affiliated to the University of Pune. (Permanent Affiliation as per Government of Maharashtra, Resolution No. UPS 1091/4767/(V) dated 14th February,1992)
Initially the College classes were held in the N.M.V. High School. The present site of the college was leased to the Shikshan Prasarak Mandali by Shri. Jagannath Maharaj Pandit at the request of Lokmanya Tilak. The main building was constructed in 1928. Other buildings on the campus viz. the Library Building, Lady Ramabai Hall, Chemistry, Physics and Biology Buildings. Hostels, Computer Science building etc. were built subsequently.
In 1976, the college started a Junior College wing. The college admits students to F.Y.J.C. and S.Y.J.C. classes in Arts, Science and Commerce streams and also vocational courses.
In 2003, Sir Parashurambhau College was granted ‘A’ grade by NAAC. The reaccredidation process is going on (in pipeline).
In the year 2006-2007, the college was awarded the ‘Best College Award’ by the University of Pune.
