Government College of Engineering (GCE) Pune is located in Maharashtra (Pune). Pune is known as the historically educational and cultural capital of Maharashtra. The Govt. College of Engineering, Pune is one of the premier educational institutions of the country today. Established in the year 1854, it is a very well known and highly reputed institute for engineering education.

The Government College of Engineering Pune came into being in the year 1854 and is one of the oldest and well known engineering institutions. Initially it was known as the Poona Engineering class and Mechanical school and was basically used to train subordinate officers for carrying out public work. But, later on the school became Poona Civil Engineering College and finally in the year 1911, the name was changed to the present Government College of Engineering, Pune.

All the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Courses of the College are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education. In 2004, the institute was granted complete autonomy by the state government, and declared a center for excellence in technical education. The institute now is an autonomous engineering school with permanent affiliation to the University of Pune.

The Govt. College of Engineering, Pune, which was established in the year 1854 is one of the oldest and premier engineering institutions in the country. Later the school became Poona Civil Engineering College and subsequently in the year 1911 the name was changed to the College of Engineering, Poona popularly known as COEP. The first batch of degree course in Civil Engineering turned out in 1912. Degree courses in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering were introduced in 1914 and 1932 .
After independence in 1948, Degree courses in Metallurgy and Telecommunication were started. Degree course in Instrumentation was added in 1965. The recent additions are, Degree courses in Computer Engineering in 1992 and Production Engineering in 1995. Sixteen post graduate degree courses are being conducted in various disciplines, the first of these started in 1957. All the UG and PG courses are approved by All India Council for Technical Education.
During the period of 86 years of its University affiliation (First to University of Bombay and since 1949 to University of Poona ) the college rolled out more than 30,000 graduates, 2000 postgraduates and about 25 doctorates in various branches of engineering.
The college has set up a great tradition and has produced eminent engineers. Many outstanding alumni are managing top companies with several critical assignments all over the country and abroad Sir. Mokshgundam Vishweshwarrayya, outstanding engineering statesman who received country’s highest honor “Bharat Ratna “ is alumnus of this college.
