VEC Centre is located in the AF block of Bidhan Nagar which is a satellite town in the eastern part of Calcutta. Its distance is about 10km from the Calcutta Airport and about 15 km from Howrah Railway station.Adjacent to VEC centre is situated Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics ( an autonomous institute under Department of Atomic Energy) in the same campus and CAP(Calcutta Arm Police ) camp nearby. Several buses(S-18,71,215A,44A,minibus etc.)can be availed from Howrah station to reach the CAP Bus stop from where the office gate is about 10 minutes' walk. "CAP Camp", "Baisakhi", "Deerpark"are the keywords for destination if one hires a taxi from Airport or Rly. station. Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre is a premier R & D unit of the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. This Centre is dedicated to carry out frontier research and development in the fields of Accelerator Science & Technology, Nuclear Science (Theoretical and Experimental), Material Science, Computer Science & Technology and in other relevant areas.

The Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) is a research & development (R & D) unit under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The Centre is engaged in R & D activities in the frontier areas of science and technology. The main objective of this Centre is development around the accelerator technology and research in the fields of accelerator physics, nuclear physics, quark-gluon plasma, theoretical physics, material sciences, chemistry, isotope production etc. A K=130 room temperature cyclotron has been operating at the Centre since 1980. It is a national facility open to all research organizations and universities to carry out basic and applied physics experiments. Currently heavy ion beams up to energy about 15 MeV per nucleons are available for the experiments. The Centre is in the process of building a Superconducting Cyclotron (K=500) and Radio-active Ion Beam Facility for basic and applied research. A medical Cyclotron facility is being set up for production of radiopharmaceuticals for medical purposes and also for R & D activities relevant to DAE programmes. The Centre has intensive collaboration programmes with the academic institutions in India and with the international laboratories in the relevant fields of research and development.

The Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) is a research and development unit of the Indian Department of Atomic Energy. The VECC, located in Calcutta, India, performs research in basic and applied nuclear sciences. The Centre houses a 224 cm cyclotron—the first of its kind in India—which has been operational since 16 June 1977. It provides proton, deuteron, alpha particle and heavy ion beams of various energies to other institutions.

The Centre is a transit node of ERNET, handling the electronic mail and Internet facilities for other universities and research institutes.
