Located in From its inception in 1922, the Department of Commerce, University of Calcutta has traversed a long way before resting on the laurels of becoming the first UGC-acclaimed Centre of Advanced Study (CAS) among Commerce Departments of UGC-approved Indian universities. The Department takes pride in its commendable performance vis-à-vis major developmental indicators such as student intake, number of teachers, published research work, updated curricula and courseware. Almost from the very beginning, the Department has been utilizing the services of a number of guest faculty members drawn from both academic institutions and industrial organizations of repute. At present, it has 19 whole time teachers and 24 guest faculty members. Many of the distinguished faculty members have done Ph.D. and are members of various professional institutions. Some of them have also travelled abroad for attending national and international seminars and conferences., The Department, in keeping with the advances made in different branches of commerce, has revised the curriculum from time to time. The last revision of curriculum took place in 2002. Under this new curriculum there are 20 papers of 50 marks each for the popular M. Com. course run by the Department both in the Day and in the Evening Sections. It started its M. Phil curriculum in 1988.The Ph.D. programme of the Department is one of the strong areas. Quite a large number of researchers have got their Ph.D. degrees in accounting, finance, management and other allied areas in commerce under the supervision of distinguished members of the faculty. At present, a good number of research scholars are carrying on research work in various fields of studies under the guidance of faculty members., The Department publishes a bi-annual journal, Business Studies, which features research-based contributions from reputed academicians and researchers all over the country. The Silver Jubilee volume of the journal has been published recently.Research and teaching performance of the teachers of the Department had earned all India recognition leading to sanction of Special Assistance Programme by the University Grants commission in 1987. The third phase of the SAP has been successfully completed. A number of research volumes have been published by the Department under this programme during the last two phases. National Seminars and Conferences on contemporary issues are held periodically in each year.In early 2005, the Department in recognition of its contribution to academic and research activities was granted Assistance for Infrastructural support in Humanities and Social Sciences [ASIHSS], an Infrastructure Development Programme, sponsored by the University Grants Commission. The Commerce Department of the Calcutta University has earned this unique distinction conferred to only a few SAP-qualified University departments all over India, based on their excellence in teaching and research. The said ASIHSS programme has also been completed very successfully. For all its research activities, the Department has got the rare honour and distinction as ‘Centre of Advanced Study (CAS) by the UGC. In recognition of the need of the hour for a Masters Degree in Finance, the Department has started a two-year full-time self-financed MBA Course in Finance, consisting of four semesters.
