The Cancer Research Institute was founded by a great visionary of this country–Prof. V. R. Khanolkar -on December 31, 1950. In 1941, Prof. Khanolkar joined the newly established Tata Memorial Hospital, as the Director of Pathology and Biochemistry. He was convinced that Cancer as a disease would become an important problem in India and that only intensive research would help understand it’s intricacies. He initiated research work in the pathology laboratories of TMH on cancer patterns in the country and their relationship to life styles. He also knew that to understand and solve the problems, research work had to be done in this country by Indian scientists and doctors. A committee set up to review the research carried out at the TMH recommended the setting up of a Cancer research centre in Bombay. The Indian Cancer Research Centre (ICRC) was thus established on December 31,1952. Over the years the centre grew in stature due to it’s scientific talent and is recognised as the country’s premier Cancer Research Institute. In 1966, the two Institutions, the TMH and ICRC, were amalgamated to create the first comprehensive cancer centre in India, the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) as a grant -in aid institution under the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India. Strong support form the DAE has helped in establishing modern research facilities at CRI and in pioneering research in several frontline areas. Since it’s inception, the CRI, has been working on all facets of cancer with equal stress on fundamental and clinically oriented research. Research activities cover a very wide spectrum and include areas such as life styles in relation to cancer patterns, environmental carcinogenesis - both chemical and viral, cancer immunology, cell and molecular biology with special emphasis on oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes, and chemotherapy. There are groups working on development of newer laboratory models for human cancers, and transgenic mice. Work is in progress to isolate, and characterise stem cells from placental cord. Cytogenetic, molecular genetic, and immunological studies are in progress on families with high incidence of breast cancers. Research is conducted, using a multidisciplinary approach, in close collaboration with clinicians at the TMH.
The major thrust of research in the Cancer Research Institute continues on cancers relevant to India- namely the head and neck cancers, leukemia and lymphoma, cancer of the cervix, esophagus, etc. The multidisciplinary approach, taken up over the years, has yielded important pointers towards understanding the basic changes occurring during transformation in these tumors.
The major cancers in India are the Head and neck cancers which are related to chewing of tobacco and smoking. There are several programmes aimed at understanding the changes in the oral cavity after chronic exposure to tobacco. These include alterations in oncogenes and tumor supressor genes, the status of human papilloma viruses and other marker proteins in oral pre-cancer and cancer. A novel transforming gene has been identified in oral tumors. Immunological studies have focussed on the mechanism of action of cytotoxic T cells in oral tumors. Though tobacco related cancers form the single largest group of cancers in India, there is no information on health hazards in occupationally exposed tobacco industry workers. Monitoring air samples in processing plants has shown them to be far beyond the permissible limits. Mutagenic burden and chromosomal damage were markedly higher in tobacco industry workers. The role of genetic susceptibility factors in tobacco related oral cancers is being investigated. A human oral cavity tumor transplanted in nude athymic mice has been developed as a model for gene therapy using herpes virus Tk (HSV-TK) gene. Multicentric studies on the incidence of HPV 16 and 18 in cancer of cervix and in cervical dysplasias have indicated higher incidence of these two HPV types in the country in these conditions.
Several studies on chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) have helped understand the mechanism of alteration in these cells. A method for enrichment of stem cells from cord blood has been standardized for the stem cell bank and stored bone marrow cells are being used for transplantation. A study on the secretion of cytokines by and the status of their receptors in lymphoma cells has been undertaken in patients with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Important contributions have been made to understand paraneoplastic syndrome which leads to cachexia in patients. A Western blot kit for the diagnosis of Human Immunodeficiency Virus - HIV-1 and HIV-2 has been developed from viral isolates made from Indian patients with AIDS. Organization ....
