The Bidhannagar College, Government of West Bengal, had a humble beginning with 52 students on June 25, 1984 in a school building at 142 BF Block, Salt Lake City, Kolkata - 700064. But from its inception the College was modelled as a centre of academic excellence. Affiliated to the University of Calcutta as an under-graduate college, it has been admitting Honours students only. Students admitted in 2008 academic session and onwards will be registered in West Bengal State University, Barasat, North 24 Parganas. The College started functioning with the following Science Honours subjects - Physics, Chemistry
( though the admission were started from 1985-86 session), Mathematics, Economics and the Humanities Honours subjects - English, Bengali, History, Political Science and Philosophy. Honours courses in Zoology and Statistics started from 1997- 1998 and 2000-2001 academic session respectively. Honours courses in Botany and Microbiology were opened during 2002-2003. To solve the acute space problem of the college, a new building has been built on a 7.5 acre prime land at EB-2, Salt Lake City, Kolkata 700064.
The foundation stone of the new building was laid by the Honourable Chief Minister, Sri Jyoti Basu on February 17, 1996. The new college campus was inaugurated by the former Honourable Chief Minister, Sri Jyoti Basu on February 22, 2001 in the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, the Hon’ble Higher Education Minister, Prof. Satyasadhan Chakraborty and other dignitaries. The new three storied magnificient building, constructed at a cost of Rs 6.4268 crores, has an area of about 70,000 square feet. This new building is meant for the Science departments only. But at present the Humanities departments, the Library, and the Administrative wing have also been temporarily accomodated in the present building. Permanent acomodation for these sections in another building is under consideration. The Bidhannagar College, Government of West Bengal, is projected to be a premier institution of the State in the near future.
The Bidhannagar College is the last but one in the line of Government colleges in West Bengal. It had a humble beginning in the year of its establishment in 1984 in Salt Lake (BF-142,Sector-1, Calcutta-64),which till then had rung with the peals of students who later on went for higher studies to renouned institutions of the country(JNU, DSE, IIM,) and abroad (University of Missourie, Atlanta, etc). Though established in a hurry ,the Bidhannagar College was modelled from its very birth as a centre of academic excellence .The reason why it began with such a slender roll strength was that its earliesst scholars had to qualify almost for the norms of the Presidency college. Since its inception it has also been open to thre Honours students only. The performances of its students in the examinations of the Calcutta University in all these years speak volumes for maintenance of the standard originally set for it by the zealous Minister of Higher education of the time. The Government of West Bengal has now come forward with a majestic plan to transform the Bidhannagar College into a college of the twenty -first century. With that end in view about 7.5 acres of prime land at the EB-Block.The foundation stone of the new structure which is already under construction, was led by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal Shri Jyoti Basu in the year 1998. In its new form the College is to be equipped with a spacious library, large reading room annexed to it, a large auditorium, playgroundand enriched laboratories for conventional and ultra-modern subjects. The work to this end has taken a desired momentum, and that day is not far off when the students of the College would be unreservedly proud of their association with the noble institution.
