Sreegopal Banerjee College was established on 21 st July, 1958 as a General Degree College initially under University of Calcutta but subsequently under the University of Burdwan after establishment of the latter in 1960.The Institution assumes a considerable significance by virtue of its location.The College is situated at the villege Bagati of the District of Hooghly.The villege itself is the native place of Ramgopal Ghosh, a Derozian and leading light of the 19th Century Bengal Renaissance.It is surrounded by places like Tribeni, Saptagram, Bansberia nd Mahanand which have rich cultural heritage. The mission of the College is to make our students academically sound, mentally alert, socially concious, morally upright, environmentally aware and finally to make them 'Man' in the true sense of the term., The College was assessed by NAAC in 2006 and obtained B+ Grade., The College runs in three shifts, i.e., Morning,Day and Evening.In the Morning shifts, General courses Arts and Sciences are taught.In the day shift General and Honours Courses are taught in both Arts and Science while in the Evening shift General and Honours courses in the Commerece are taught.Honours Courses are taught in Bengali, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Economics, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology and Botany.Last year the College also has opened a Study-Centre of Netaji Subhas Open University. The College has as enrollment of more than two thousands students.There are, at present, 44 full-time teachers including Principal.Also there are 6 graduate Laboratory Instructors and some Part-time and Guest-Lecturer in several Departments.The College runs a study center of Netaji Subhas Open University.There are two units of Natioal Service Scheme which are active in orienting College students towards community service.The College has a vibrant NCC Unit comprising of both boys and girls cadets., The College has a well organized and valuable Library comprising of 31529 books.The College offers full-free and half-free studentship to the needy students and financial aid is also provided from the Students' Aid Fund. The College also arranges for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Students Stipends.The College runs, in collaboration with the Institute of Computers Engineers (India), Calcutta, Computer Courses and the College Computer Centre have been accredited by the DOEACC, Govt. of India for 'O' level Computer courses. There is a 12-station Multi Gym in the college.UGC Seminar On " Human Rights Education" held On 5th & 6th Nov. 2009 which was organised by Department of History & Pol. Sc. Hooghly District Youth Parliament Competition & Quiz contest, 2009-2010 under the aegis of the Department of Parliament Affairs, Govt. of West Bengal was held in the college on 30/01/2010. College has organised certain action & awaresness campaigns on "Climate Change, like Plantation,Water Body Cleaning etc" in collaboration with School of Fundamental Research, Regional Resource Agency of Ministry of Environment & Forest., Govt Of India during the year 2009-10.
