Named after the revolutionary and greatly inspiring poet Sukanta Bhattacharya who died young, this College is the outcome of a long-cherished desire of the local people for a higher education institution in this area that lacks nothing for such an institution. People from all walks of life of this primarily middle-class and working-class dominated area came forward cutting across religious, political or communal lines to set up this College and finally the dream came true in December, 1986. In founding this College three municipalities- Champdani, Bhadreswar and Baidyabati - played a key role with munificent donations along with local people who extended generous help. Remarkably important contribution came from Purbachal Multipurpose Co-operative Colony Society Ltd which donated two bighas of land on which the college stands. These apart, industrial workers who form a great part of local population displayed their high quality of social consciousness by donating their mites in establishing the College.
