St Josephs College, Nainital was established in the year 1888,
St. Joseph's College, Nanital has been one of the premier schools in the country since its inception in 1888. The school is now 119 years old and during these years, a very distinguished list of Old Boys have been through the portals of the school. Unfortunately, over the years, the need of a body to bind and bring together the Old Boys under one umbrella was felt. This body would not only give us the opportunity to relive the good old days spent in Sem, but also provide us with a platform to network and use the forum for our personal advancement.
Sem celebrated its Centenary in 1988 with a week-long celebration held in the school. In order to make these celebrations, the great success that they were, the first Sem Old Boys Association was set up. The founding Old Boys were Tariq Quraishi (1965), Arun Sahay (1963), Kamal Sahdev, Arvind Singh (1971) and Ranvir Singh amongst a host of other Old Boys. This association did yeoman service in reaching out to Old Boys spread all over the Globe, raising funds for the school and getting souvenirs ready. There can be no doubt that the OBA was the single main factor behind the success of the Centenary Celebrations. Unfortunately, with the conclusions of the Centenary Celebrations, the OBA went into hibernation. It was as if the very reason for its existence had ceased to exist. Thereafter, it was only in October 2005, that a concerted effort was made to revive and restart the OBA.
These efforts finally took shape and in the 'St. Joseph's College Old Boys Association' was finally registered as a society. Capt Vijay Chandra (1961) and Rakesh Chopra (1971) took office as President and Secretary. Unfortunately in May 2006, Capt Vijay Chandra was unable to continue owing to personal circumstances, and in his place, the then Vice-President, Gurpreet Singh Bindra (1965) took over as President. Brig S. K. Sapru (1963) took charge as Vice-President and Sunil Sahai (1975) continued as treasurer.
The present body of Office-bearers have completed the legal requirements, obtained permission to function as a charitable organisation and set in process a membership structure. Regular get-togethers have been held, with the active support of old Semians and have given us a sense of belonging and togetherness. The OBA web-site 'www.semoba.in' has started functioning. We would urge all Old Boys to visit the site regularly, get news of the OBA and share their experiences with other old boys.
Having been able to establish a foot hold, so to say in Delhi, the time is now opportune, to spread the gospel of the OBA and create centres all over the country and abroad, particularly Nanital, Haldwani, Bareilly, Kashipur, Mumbai, Pune etc. The website would serve as a source of Old Boy information. Finally, it can only be stressed that this is our OBA and everyone needs to contribute in making it a success. It is imperative that all Old Boys join the OBA and help us realise the need of a strong and vibrant OBA.
