Govind Ballabh (GB) Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, initially named as Uttar Pradesh Agricultural University, was established in 1960 as a first Agricultural University in the country. The objectives of the University are:
- Making provision for the education of the rural people of Uttar Pradesh in different branches of study, particularly Agricultural Rural Industry, business and other allied subjects;
- Furthering the execution of research particularly in agriculture and other allied subjects;
- Understanding field and extension programmes.
The University is engaged in teaching, research and extension education. The University has a very big programme under the Directorate of Research. Its research programme covers such areas as cereals and vegetable crops, fruits, livestock and fisheries, social and agro-forestry, agricultural economics, extension and communication, agricultural engineering and some of the areas of basic sciences related to agriculture.
For extending the useful research to extension personnel of the State Agriculture Department and selected farmers, the University has a very elaborate extension programme, which started in 1973, under the Directorate of Extension.
The extension programme of the University consists of the following major activities: 1) Farm Advisory Services
2) Training Services
3) Information and Communication Services.

Kharif Fodder Crops Maize Cultivation
Rabi Fodder Crops
Rabi Oilseed Crops
Soil Testing and Fertilizer
Applicants should have the equivalent to grade 7 standard i.e., one who could read and write proficiently in Hindi and do simple arithmetic calculations, and be above 18 years of age. Preference is given to practising farmers, school and college drop outs and retired personnel seeking agriculture as a post-retirement profession.
All courses offered in the distance education mode are available in English and Hindi. Seminars, workshops and practical sessions are only available to students who belong to 21 districts of Western and Hill Areas of Uttar Pradesh in which the Directorate of extension has district level units.
Other participants can take part in District/Village level training/gosthies and in Farmers' fairs at Pantnagar.
