The journey began in 1969 with the establishment of a Centre of the Birla Institute of Scientific Research (BISR) founded by Shri B. M. Birla, a renowned industrialist in the newly developing Bhimtal industrial belt. The aim was to provide basic workshop facilities and testing grounds for entrepreneurs to set up industrial units in the region.

With the backing of educational institutions like Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi and B. M. Birla Science & Technology Centre, Jaipur it was a natural progression that an academic institution was established in the same campus.

The Institute commenced its academic programme in 1990 in computer education leading to MCA degree. It was affiliated to Kumaun University. Expanding the horizons for professional education, the Institute also started a 3-year B.Tech. course in Electronics & Communication Engineering in the session 2000-01. This course has now been converted into a 4-years degree programme (post 10+2) with starting the year 2003-04.

A 17 member Board of Governors guides the Institute with Padambhusan Prof. (Dr.) S. K. Joshi, former President, Indian National Science Academy and Former Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India as its Chairman. Other members of the BoG include Prof. M. K. Mishra, Vice Chancellor, BIT Mesra (Ranchi), Prof. U. S. Rawat, Vice-Chancellor, Uttarakhand Technical University, Dehradun, Prof. P. K. Pande, former Vice Chancellor, University of Roorkee, (now IIT Roorkee), Prof. V. K. Tiwari, Vice Chancellor, Graphic Era University, Dr. B. K. Gairola Ex. Director General, NIC, Prof. B. P. Joshi, Former Director, BIT Extension Centre, Noida, Shri S. N. Jha, IAS, Registrar, Indira Gandhi Women Institute of Technology, Delhi, Dr. M. K. Tiwari, Regional Officer, AICTE Centre, Kanpur, Sri Om Prakash, IAS, Principal Secretary, Technical Education, Government of Uttarakhand besides Prof. B. S. Bisht, Director, BIAS as well as two faculty members of BIAS namely Prof. Abhay Kumar Sharma and Prof. Sitangshu Dey.

The Institute is located near Lake Bhimtal. Also, it is in the vicinity of Lake Sat Tal, and Naukuchia Tal at 79.5520 degrees E longitude, 29.3572 degree N latitude, and 1319 m above Mean Sea Level in Kumaun Hills of Uttarakhand state (India). In totality, BIAS is an ideal place for teaching-learning and innovations.

Birla Institute of Applied Sciences (BIAS) is located in the most picturesque surroundings of the lake town of Bhimtal. It is in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand state. The campus is spread over an area of about 10 hectares of prime land. It is in Kumaun hills. Hence, it provides excellent environmental surroundings, ideally conducive for academic pursuit. The Institute is affiliated to the Uttarakhand Technical University, Dehradun (UTU). Hostel facility is available for all the admitted students.

The Institute finds its origin in the educational and scientific research endowments of the G. P. Birla Group of Industries. Over the years, BIAS has developed into a preferred destination for many companies for Campus Placements. In the year 2017-18 about 90 percent of MCA Final Year students and about 75 percent B. Tech. final year students got prestigious jobs through Campus Placements. The Institute focuses on development of technical, behavioral, communication, spiritual and creative skills of its students.
