Located in Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA) was constituted in the year 1987 by renaming the erstwhile Indian Forest College, which was originally established in 1938 for training senior forest officers. It is situated in the New Forest campus of Forest Research Institute (FRI) on Chakrata Road (NH-72),five kilometers from Dehradun town. IGNFA is currently functioning as a Staff College for the officers of the Indian Forest Service (IFS). The primary mandate of the Academy is to impart knowledge and skills to the professional foresters and help them to develop competence for managing the country forest and wildlife resources on a sustainable basis. In the Academy training is provided at different levels of seniority in the Indian Forest Service besides training the new entrants to the service., The Academy is located in the beautiful New Forest campus which is about 5 kilometers west of the city centre of Dehradun. The campus houses the world renowned Forest Research Institute. The 1100 acres campus is bounded by the river Tons in the north and Chakrata road on the south. Large parts of the campus are still covered with natural forest and dense experimental plantations., Professional training of IFS Probationers recruited by Union Public Service Commission in the Academy follows the sandwich pattern since 1994 in which on-the-job training (OJT) is sandwiched between Induction-Professional and Advance Phases. The Probationers join a four month Induction Phase in the Academy beginning from May and proceed for Foundational Course at LBSNAA, Mussoorie, for four months in September, after which they undergo Professional Phase for 16 months in the Academy where core forestry subjects are taught. Thereafter they join their respective state cadres where they undergo OJT for 8 months, learning practical applications and skills on professional issues taught to them in the Academy.
