National Sugar Institute (NSI) is located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The institute functions under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and Department of Food & Public Distribution. NSI carries out original research of significance and technology development at the cutting edge. It imparts training for students to make them competent, motivated engineers and scientists. The Institute not only celebrates freedom of thought, cultivates vision and encourages growth, but also inculcates human values and concern for the environment and the society.
The Institute also awards Certificate, Masters and Doctoral degrees in various branches of technology and science. It has been making special efforts to recruit talented faculty on a world-wide basis and to admit bright students from all over the country through an online selection process. The Institute has one of the finest scientific & technological staff with an information retrieval system over the campus.
It was the Indian Sugar Committee appointed by the Government of India in 1920 that first recommended the establishment of an all India institute for research in sugar technology. The need for a central sugar research institute was also emphasized by the Royal Commission in Agriculture in 1928 and the Tariff Board in 1930. The Government of India accordingly established the Imperial Institute of Sugar Technology at Kanpur in October, 1936 by taking over the Sugar Section of the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute H.B.T.I. Kanpur.
Consequent upon India's attaining independence in 1947, the name of the institute was changed from Imperial Institute of Sugar Technology to Indian Institute of Sugar Technology (I.I.S.T.). In April, 1957, the name of the Institute was again changed to National Sugar Institute (N.S.I.). The Institute shifted from the campus of HBTI, Kanpur to its own full-fledged lush green campus sprawling over 524 acres at Kalyanpur, Kanpur in 1963.

Computer Center
A computer center has been developed in the institute facilitating 35 students at one time. All the computers in the computer center are having next generation i-series processor with the latest operating system of Windows i.e windows 8.1 professional. The center is also provided with high speed optical fiber based internet provided by National Knowledge Network.
The center is designed keeping in view to provide Auto-Cad and Language Lab to impart them latest technology with the latest technique. A batch of 35 students can be accommodated in the computer center at a time.
Auto-Cad Lab
All the computers of the center in the institute has been equipped with latest version of Auto-Cad i.e Auto-Cad 2016 through Academic Resource Center, Auto-Cad. The students here are trained on Auto-Cad software to have a hands on experience to cope up with the orthodox and latest technology & techniques.
Language Lab
The computer center is also uploaded with the web version of Language Lab software “LearnSOFT Software” with unlimited licenses developed by Learnsoft Enterprise Training (“Learnsoft”). The aim of the Language Laboratory was to help the student to develop their personalities apart from technology, by the way of training them like “ How to face interview” “ How to write formal & informal letters” “ Professional Communication” “ Resume Building” and etc.
