Located in Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, established in 1959, is one of the premier institutions established by the Government of India. The aim of the Institute is to provide meaningful education, to conduct original research of the highest standard and to provide leadership in technological innovation.Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is engaged in carrying out original research of significance and technology development at the cutting edge. It imparts training to students so that they become competent and motivated engineers and scientists. The Institute celebrates freedom of thought, cultivates vision and encourages growth, but also inculcates human values and concern for the environment and the society. The Institute awards Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees in various branches of technology and science. It has been making special efforts to recruit talented faculty on a world-wide basis and to admit bright students from all over the country by a careful selection process (JEE). The Institute has about 1250 undergraduate and 850 postgraduate students, 300 faculty, and more than 1500 supporting staff. It has one of the finest scientific & technological library with an online information retrieval system over the campus LAN. During the academic year 1999-2000, the Institute graduated 266 B.Techs.,28 M.Scs.(5-year Integrated), 38 M.Sc(2-year), 304 M.Techs. and 58 Ph.Ds. in the Engineering and Science disciplines., A total of 66 short term courses where conducted for Engineering colleges, Polytechnics and the Industry. The Institute played host to 10 Workshops/Seminars/Conferences during this period. Sponsorship money totalling Rs.10 crores for Research Projects and Rs.2 crores for Consultancy Projects was received from the granting agencies and the private industry. Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is a technological institution of national importance for Education and Research. Even since its inception the 1960's IIT Kanpur has always held a leading position for excellence in technical education and training. With the start of the new millennium, IIT Kanpur would like to achieve a leading position in the areas of basic and applied research, both at the national and international levels.
