Admission Notices

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur was the first Institute in India to start Computer Science education. The initial "computer-related" courses were started at IIT Kanpur in August 1963 on an IBM 1620 system installed in the nation's first "computer classroom," a novelty then even in many North American and European universities. Gradually, the Institute drew upon some of the brightest young Indians in Computer Science to serve on its faculty and initiated an independent academic program in 1971, leading to Ph.D. and M. Tech. degrees. The undergraduate program started later, with the first batch graduating in 1983. The department was formally established in 1984. Many of the nation's leading experts, educationists and consultants in computer science today are the alumni of this department. Currently, the department has a faculty of 18 whose interests span almost all areas of Computer Science.

The department admits about 30 students every year in the B.Tech. program and 30 students in the M.Tech. program. 15 students are admitted to the dual-degree progrom, which results in students getting both a BTech and an MTech degree at the end of 5 years. There are about 5 Ph.D. students registered at a time. There are two software engineers and two other staff attached to the laboratory facilities. Besides, there are a number of research engineers working in various sponsored projects. The department has one of the best undergraduate programs in the country. The course curriculum for the undergraduate program gives the flexibility to the students to prepare for advanced specializations. The department commits to offer a set of electives so that students can plan their academic program in advance. The course structure provides a right mix of compulsory and elective courses. The department has taken initiative to implement the institute wide program for undergraduate minor in computer science for students of other disciplines. The response for this minor has been excellent.

Admission Procedure - Admission into the B.Tech programs of all departments of all IITs and some other Institutes is made once a year through a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). The minimum academic qualification for appearing in the JEE is a pass in the final examination of 10+2 system or its equivalent with Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. The admissions are offered on the basis of a candidate's All India Rank in JEE. There is also some seats available for admission to students from abroad. More information is available at the JEE Website. The CSE Department at IIT Kanpur admits 45 students every year in its B.Tech. program.

M.Tech. degree program exposes students to a wide range of courses, combined with specialized research which culminates in a thesis. Such a combination gives students the breadth and depth necessary for pursuing careers in academics as well as industry.

Duration - The residence requirements for M.Tech program is three semesters. However, it is possible to get permission to spend one semester elsewhere. If someone wants to carry out the thesis work in a company, or at some other educational institution, it is allowed by the Institute. For example, we participate in an exchange program with a few German Universities in which the students can spend a semester in Germany. The maximum time one can spend in the MTech program is three years. We also have a part-time MTech program for working professionals. These students will register for six semesters. It is possible to convert one's status from full-time to part-time and vice-versa.

Eligibility - The minimum eligibility conditions for admission to the MTech program are given below.

    1. The candidate should have secured a minimum of 55 percent marks or a CPI (Cumulatie Performance Index) of 5.0 (on a 10.0 scale) in the qualifying examination. It should be at least seven percent higher than the minimum pass marks/CPI. (For example, if the minimum pass marks in some university is 50, then the candidate should have got at least 57 percent marks.)

    2. The applicant must have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Master's in Science. The applicant must have a sufficient background in Computer Science to complete the degree requirements with reasonable performance.

    3. The candidate must have a valid GATE score. We strongly prefer that the GATE score be in Computer Science. In rare cases (GATE score in EE, EC, or Math, greater than 99), we have called candidates for interview/test. However, in the last few years, almost no one with a non-CS GATE score has been found strong enough to merit admission. The above requirements do not necessarily apply for admission of the candidates under QIP (Quality Improvement Program), Defence Personnel and other sponsored categories.

    Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Program

The department is actively involved in research in all current areas of Computer Science. The focus of the PhD program is on research training with a high degree of specialization. The aim of such a training is to make our PhD students very competent in their respective areas, so that they may be able to take up teaching or research-and-development professions.

Duration - The residence requirements for Ph.D. program is four or six semesters depending on whether the student has M.Tech. or B.Tech. degree, respectively.

Eligibility - In order to apply for the Ph.D., you must normally have an M.Tech./M.E. in any branch of engineering. An MCA degree is considered equivalent to the B.Tech./BE degree and is not normally sufficient for admission. In certain exceptional cases (typically students at or near the top of class, minimum 75% marks), candidates with B.Tech./B.E. in any branch of engineering, or those with M.Sc. in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Statistics may also be considered. A minimum of 55 percent marks or a CPI (Cumulatie Performance Some requirements may differ for candidates under QIP (Quality Improvement Program), Defence Personnel, SC/ST, and other sponsored categories. More information is available on the website of the IITK Senate Post-Graduate Committee (SPGC).
