It was also known as Mahodaya during the time of Mihita Bhoja. Kannauj is an ancient city in earlier times the capital of the Empire of Harsha under Emperor Harsha. It is said that Kanyakubja Brahmin’s are originally from Kannauj. There are many temples in Kannauj which are very important by both Historical as well as spiritual purposes. It is very much famous for perfume also. That is the reason why it is mentioned as the city of perfumes.
