The college was established in the year 1975 as an extension of Gauri Pathshala Inter College (established 1905). The primary aim of the establishment of this college in the thick locality of Malviya Nagar(Ahiyapur). The birth place of Bharat Ratna Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tondon. Pt. Madam Mohan Malviya, Pt. Bal Krishna Bhatt was to cater to the educational needs of the girls of the area. It was the dream of Rajarshi Tandon to provide undergraduate education to the girls so it was difficult for them to reach out to the university. In 1975 with the efforts of Late Shri Hemvati Nandan Bahugura and Late Smt Rani Tondon the college was established with the subjects Hindi, Sanskrit, Education, Music Instrumental and Vocal, Politics science, Economics, Ancient History, English, Sociology and Philosophy. The college received grant in aid in 1984 in the efforts of Late Chaudhary Naunihal Singh, Shri Sumit Vya----- Late Kamla Prasad Mohilanj, "Kunnan Guruji" and Late Ashok Kumar Tandon. The college attained the central status and become a constituent college of the University of Allahabad in 2005. The college received B grade by NAAC in the year 2004.

Rajarshi Tandon Girls' Degree College, Allahabad volunteered to be assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council by submitting their self-study report. National Assessment and Accreditation Council constituted an Expert Committee to visit the college and validate its self-study report. The Peer Team comprises Prof. H.S. Soch, Former Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Punjab as Chairperson, Prof. B.M. Bhalla, Former Principal, Dayal Singh College, Delhi as Member and Prof. Kiran Angra, Principal, MDSD Girls' College, Ambala City, as Member Coordinator. The team visited the institution for two days i.e. from 2nd to 3rd November, 2004. Dr. Latha Pillai, Adviser, NAAC monitored the Peer Team successfully as Internal Co-ordinator. The Peer Team carefully perused and analyzed the self-study report submitted by the institute. During the actual visit, Peer Team went through the relevant documents, visited the departments and interacted with the various constituents of the institution. The academic, co-curricular, extra-curricular, sports and other facilities of the institution were looked into. The Peer Team also interacted at length with the Principal, faculty, students, non-teaching staff, parents and alumni of the institution. Based on the above exercise and keeping in mind the criteria identified by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, the Peer Team has considered the assessment and accreditation of the college.
