Admission Notices

The Harish-Chandra Research Institute (Mehta Research Institute till 11 Oct 2000) is an autonomous institute, funded by the Department of Atomic Energy. It is the North Indian link of a chain of institutes aided by the DAE for conducting research in fundamental sciences. At HRI we concentrate on Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. We have, at present, twenty seven faculty members, and we expect to grow rapidly in the coming years. The Institute has a doctoral programme, leading to a PhD. degree awarded by the Allahabad University. Admissions to the graduate program take place through the JEST and an interview. Students undergo a year of rigorous course work and then start research continuing for 4 to 5 years more.

Postdoctoral fellowships are also offered. There is an active visitors programme through which reputed scientists may spend a few days to a few months at the Institute. We also offer summer studentships to final year MSc students.

The current Director of the Institute is Prof H. S. Mani. Though HRI has been in existence for a number of years (since 1975 !), its current stage of growth began with the acquisition, in 1989, of 66 acres of land just off the Sangam at Allahabad, and the construction of the beautiful new campus. Recruitment of faculty, which had stopped in the intervening years, resumed in 1991. The construction of the campus is nearly complete. The institute moved from its temporary office to the new campus, at Chhatnag, Jhusi (a 30 minute drive from the centre of Allahabad) in the summer of 1996.

From humble beginnings, with six Faculties, about 2962 students, it has seen phenomenal growth in the last fifty years. Today the number of Faculties has grown to 13 and includes Arts, Commerce, Education and Psychology, Fine Arts, Home Science, Journalism & Communications, Medicine, Performing Arts, Science, Social Work, Technology & Engineering. Besides these 13 Faculties, the University also administers a Polytechnic, Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, M.K.Amin Arts and Science College & College of Commerce, Padra and Smt. Surajben Gordhanbhai Patel Commerce & Arts College for Girls.

An Experimental School is attached to the Faculty of Education and Psychology and a Balwadi is attached to the Faculty of Home Science to give practical experience to students. Since the inception of the University, the Oriental Institute is a part of the University and conducts research and publishes 'Sahityamalas' on old manuscipts. The University also runs a Centre for Continuing and Adult Education, where numerous short term and long term courses are run for users outside the University system.

The academic achievements of the University are reflected in the fact that the UGC has selected One department for location a 'Centre of Advanced Studies', (CASE) Nine Departments as 'Departments for Research Support', (DRS's) and Two departments for 'Committee for Strengthening Infrastructure in Science and Technology', (COSIST's).

The University has encouraged researches and have established Population Research Centre, IPCL Centre for National And International Industrial Development, a Research Cell in Banking by Reserve Bank of India, a Centre for Post Graduate Research and Training in Bio-Technology. Women's Studies Research Centre, National Social Science Information Centre, Canadian Studies Research Centre, WHO Collaborative Centre for Research in Nutrition, Baroda Rayon Centre for Research in Man-made Fiber Technology, a Centre for Research in Planning and Development, a Centre for Gnome Research and Shirmant Fatehsing Rao Gaekwad Centre for Research in Bio-diversity.

Normally within a year about 300 Research Projects are undertaken with a grant of Rs. 30 Million. These grants are obtained from International Bodies such as Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, UNICEF, WHO, and IDRC. The research grants are also received from Natinal Bodies, such as -- Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Science and Technology (DSTT), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Department of Health and Family Welfare (DHFW), Family Planning Association of India, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Environment, Ministry of Environment and Forests (DOE), Ministry of Human Resource Development(HRD), Ministry of Water Resources (GOI), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Population Council.

The University has its own modernized printing press which makes publication of research work easy. It has its own centralized Computer Centre over and above numerous PCs and mini computers in different departments. It also has a centralized Library, besides Libraries at the Faculty of Technology & Engineering and Medicine. The total holding of the Library today is about 3,00,000 books and it subscribes to 25,000 journals, both Indian and International. The process of computerization of the Library has been taken up an dvery soon the Library will be on the national grid of University Libraries.

The student population of the University has risen to 33,000. There are 13 Halls of Residence for men students and four for women students. The University has a Union where all the students and the teachers of the University are members. This has promoted a kinship and unity not only amongst the students, but also between the students, the teachers and the University. The Union has become a nerve centre for all student activities. The National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Social Service (NSS) and Auxiliary Cadet Corps (ACC), provide training as well as scope for community work.

A well co-ordinated Physical Education department looks after the sports facilities of the University. The University has a full-fledged Health Centre catering to the needs of health care of students as well as of staff.

In addition to the above, the University has about 500 residential staff quarters on the campus at Baroda besides its campus of Water Management and Research Centre at Samiala(about 10 kms away).

The M. S. University of Baroda has recorded rapid progress and recognition for excellent work and teachers since inception.
