Thapar University, Patiala

Department of Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of man; being that practical application of the most important principles of natural Philosophy which has in a considerable degree realized the anticipations of Bacon, and changed the aspect and state of affairs in the whole world. It refers to the practice of organizing the design and construction, [and we would add operation] of any artifice which transforms the physical world around us to meet some recognized need.

The Department of Civil Engineering at Thapar University, recently completed five decades of its existence on this lush green Thapar Technology Campus at Patiala. Founded in the year 1956, the Department has created a rich legacy of alumni, who have excelled in varied fields ranging from academics to project management, designing earthquake resistant structures to constructing bridges, managing the ever changing needs of the our developing country.

The department is one of its kinds in the region, which provides not only quality under-graduate education, but also an excellent research environment through its Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs. The Department has faculties from diverse streams and specializations, with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities to boot.
