L V Prasad Eye Institute is a comprehensive eye health facility with its main campus located in Hyderabad, India. A World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Prevention of Blindness, the Institute offers comprehensive patient care, sight enhancement and rehabilitation services and high-impact rural eye health programs. It also pursues cutting edge research and offers training in human resources for all levels of ophthalmic personnel.
LVPEI's mission is to provide equitable and efficient eye care to all sections of society. Since establishment in 1987 we have provided outpatient services to over 6 million people and surgical care to over 585,000 patients - 52 percent of them free, regardless of complexity. We have trained over 12,000 eye care personnel from India and abroad. The Institute's innovative and comprehensive approach to community eye health, known as the LVPEI Eye Health Pyramid, has been adopted as a model by the government of India and by other developing countries.
The LVPEI system is now a network spanning two tertiary centres in Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam, and 80 secondary and primary care centres that cover the remotest rural areas in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. LVPEI is a not-for-profit organization governed by two trusts: the Hyderabad Eye Institute and the Hyderabad Eye Research Foundation. The Institute is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for the Prevention of Blindness and a Global Resource Center for VISION 2020: The Right to Sight initiative.

The Eye Institute is a non-profit organization governed by: the Hyderabad Eye Institute (HEI) and the Hyderabad Eye Research Foundation (HERF). The mission of the Eye Institute is to provide affordable and competent eye care to all sections of society. Therefore, we focus on geographically and economically disadvantaged groups, including both the rural and the urban backward classes and extend our services to them through satellite clinics and rural affiliates. Since our establishment we have provided outpatient services to 6 million people and surgical care to over 585,000 patients - almost 52 percent of them free of charge.
With the center of excellence in Hyderabad and tertiary centers at Bhubaneswar and Visakhapatnam, the L V Prasad Eye Institute also has 80 primary and secondary eye care and centers. These centers alone have provided eye care over to 2 million outpatients and over 71% of these have received treatment free of cost and more than two thirds of over the 198,000 surgeries are performed entirely free of cost.
So far, we have trained over 12,000 eye care personnel from both India and other countries. LVPEI also plays a key role in monitoring the quality of cataract surgery in 80 Rotary hospitals in the country.
