The Centre for Environmental Studeis was established in 1995 in the College of Engineering, GITAM. The Department of Environmental Studies was established in 1995 and is offering the following two courses 1) M.Sc. Environmental Studies and 2) Bachelor of Environmental Studies (B.E.M.) Both the Courses were started with financial support from University Grants Commission (U.G.C.), New Delhi to impart technical skills in the field of applied Ecology, Environmental Pollution and Environmental Management. The courses were recognised by the Andhra University. The Department has an area of 2000 Sq. mts. The laboratories are equipped with modern instruments like Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, UV-VIS Spectrophotometers, Stack Monitoring equipment, Air monitoring kits, Noise pollution and Electro magnetic radiation monitoring kits. The department has good faculty strength in different fields of specialisations.
The Department of Computer Science and Technology has a 3 year Under-Graduate and a 2 year Graduate programme. The Department is one the best among those in all Engineering Colleges of India. The Computer Center available today at the campus is hailed as one of the best among all the Institutions. The chief strength of this department is 28 committed faculty members. The success of this department is its way of conducting the classes ensuring high quality in the Teaching-Learning process. It employs audio-visual aids, video lessons to make Teaching – Learning Process effective and also lays emphasis on excellence and research.about computer science dept in science college.
In view of the great demand, growing potential for employment and research in the field of Biotechnology, a two year inter-disciplinary M.Sc course in Biotechnology has been started from the academic year 1997-98. The students are being admitted into this course on the basis of their ranks in common entrance test conducted by Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. The sanctioned strength of the students is 24. The course work in this department is being organized to expose the students to different thrust areas of Biotechnology (plant, animal, marine, industrial and medical), Microbiology, Biochemistry, Immunology and Instrumentation. The practical laboratory experiments are conducted in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Tissue culture and molecular biology laboratories which are being equipped with spectrophotometers, centrifuges, electrophoretic, PCR and chromatographic apparatus besides the common laboratory equipment.
During the academic year 1999-2000 a two year M.Sc degree course in Microbiology has been started and it is presently attached to the department of Biotechnology. Admission to this course is also based on the ranks obtained by the candidates in the common entrance test conducted by Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. The sanctioned strength for this course is 24. The faculty of Biotechnology department are offering theory and practical classes for M.Sc Microbiology course with the assistance of the following staff who are also teaching relevant Microbiology course for M.Sc Biotechnology students.
