Located in BRIEF HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION, Home Science towards empowerment of Women :, " All things turnout to be best for us When we make the best of the things given to us", Having this in mind we gratefully remember the many generous persons who started, this life oriented course for the empowerment of women of this locality. The Sisters of Holy Cross Convent, Tuticorin, our esteemed sister Institution, bought a loving home for women to create aesthetic sense among the women of Tuticorin. The foundatipnsjone was laid in 1955 and the house was known as Holy Family Institute. The Holy Family Institute, Thoothukudi, formerly known as T.L.S. (Tamil Literature Society) was bought in 1955 from the Tuticorin Diocesan association represented by the Bishop of Tuticorin. The property was purchased on 13-04-1951 from the association by the sisters of Holy Cross Convent., In the year 1955, our sisters started a Technical School for needle work, dress - making and embroidery and also a Nursery School for children. In November 1955, the first set of girls was sent for theGovemment Technical Examination. During the year 1966, the Home Science Academy was started and esince them it was known as Holy Cross Home Science Academy. It was a two year Home Science Course started by Sr. Rita as Director & Sr. Audrey as assistant in July 1966., The main thrust of this academy was to train young girls for an ideal family life and to live as better citizens. They were taught Human Development, Textiles, Foods & Nutrition, Cookery, Home Management etc. Besides young girls and married ladies also attended certificate courses in cookery and needle work. On the 1st of August 1968 the Home Science Course received its approval from Tamil Nadu Government, which allowed the students tor the Government Examination and this course was continued till 1995., Early in February 1973, the University of Madras had asked the Sisters to takeup B.Sc, Degree course in Home Science. The month of June 1975 brought a new change in this Institution. It was a red letter day for the management, staff & students of Holy Cross Home Science Academy. Sr. Elizabeth Rose was appointed as the first principal of the College and with the timely help offered by the sisters of the Holy Cross College, Trichy and Nagercoil. The College was affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University on July 1st 1975., ANursery School within the campus provided facilities to learn the behaviour pattern of little ones and also the psychological changes that occurs during their preschool period. This found a part of the practical work on Human Development studies throughout the year., The first batch of College students came out creditably at the first semester examination held in November 1975. Thanks to the effort taken by Sr. Phyllis, who worked tirelessly. The P.G. Diploma Course on Nutrition and Food Service Management & Dietetics (NFSMD) was started in the year 1994. Sr. Phyllis was awarded PRIYADARSHINI INDIRA AWARD in 2000 by International Integrity Peace and Friendship Society, Bangalore for her besLservice for the youth., Slowly bu steading it has grown and now it has strength of 97. Our aim is to empower women and to provide various career opportunities to Food Science and Nutrition graduates in the field of dietetics, nutrition, catering, house keeping, front office, quality control, food processing, preservation, baking & confectionery, food service and to prepare them as dieticians, nutritionists catering technologists and food service adminstrators in Hotels, Canteens, Meal schemes and as Teachers and encourage them to takeup research work at national and international levels like ICMR, NIN, CFTRI, WHO, FAO, UNICEF etc. Our education is towards the wholesome development of women, who will be charged and enthused to face the demands of the society in future..
