Located in The Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, situated in the heart of Tamil Nadu on the banks of river Cauvery, was started as a joint and co-operative venture of Government of India and Government of Tamil Nadu during 1964 with a view to cater to the needs of man-power in technology for the Country. The College has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. It has been registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 . Its management is looked after by the Board of Governors consisting of Hon'ble Minister for Education, Government of Tamil Nadu as Chairman, and Members from Government of Tamil Nadu, Government of India, AICTE, UGC, IIT, Chennai and Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. With students drawn from all the States of our Country and faculty recruited through open advertisement throughout the Country , the Institution has an all India character . Ever since its establishment, the institution has registered speedy progress and it now offers Under Graduate Courses in eleven branches and Post Graduate Courses in twenty two disciplines of Engineering &Technology besides Ph.D. in all the departments. The college enjoys autonomous status for all the Post Graduate Courses and Under Graduate Courses continuously for the past 22 and 14 years respectively. Because of thisrich experience, this institution is seeking the Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Govt. of India.Residential facilities are provided for most of the students and staff in the spacious college campus of about 800 acres. Essential basic amenities like Hospital,Post & Telegraph, Telecom Centre,fully computerised State Bank of India branch, Book stall, Reprographic Centre, Canteen, Co-op. Stores etc. are also available in the Campus. Laboratories and Workshops with sophisticated and modernized machineries/equipment like Traffic Management Systems, Radar Speedometer, 100 Ton Capacity Universal Testing Machine, Software packages like NISA 2, STAAD II etc. in the Civil Engineering Department, Solid State Circuits and Devices Lab., Analog and Digital IC Lab., Digital Process Lab., Telematics Lab. etc. in the Electronics &Communication Eng. Department, Instrumentation Lab., Transducers and Measurements Lab. etc. in the Instrumentation & Control Eng.Department, Thermal Engineering Lab., Metrology Lab. with Vibrometers, Comparators, CAD/CAM Lab. with SO,HP and DEC Alpha Workstations, Software packages like UNIGRAPHICS, PRO ENGINEER, VERICUT, CSA/NASTRAN, Fluid Machinery Lab. with Turbines, Pumps etc. in the Mechanical Engineering Department, HMTSTC -15 Turning Centre, HARTFORD Vertical Machining Centre, TRIAC -3 Axis Milling Machine with ATC, Software packages in Master CAM, Auto CAD R-15 etc. in the Production Engineering Departmenthave been newly established. Information Technology Centre with IBM RS6000 with 90 terminals SUNSPARC Ultra 10 Multimedia, ECAD and VLSI design etc is being established currently. Campus- wide Local Area Network with number of systems to provide computer training to 450 students at a time, global internet connection ERNET & VSNL are available in the Octagon. This centre is open 24 hours aday for use by students and staff. Facilities for extracurricular activities like NCC, NSS, Students Chapters of IEEE, IE Sports & Games with Modern Gymnasium are also available in the campus. The Department of Training and Placement has been doing excellent work for the placement of students right from the inception. The Alumni of RECT have excelled in various spheres of activity and are positioned very well in a number of leading Government, Public Sector &Private Organisations.
