National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria
National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria was established at Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli, India by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India in 1991 in view of the pioneering work on Marine Cyanobacteria initiated in 1987 at this university and the biotechnological potential of this group of organisms. The facility is well equipped and has a committed team of faculty and researchers. So far the progress of work in this facility has been commended by many. To fulfill one of its objectives of developing trained human resource, NFMC regularly conducts Annual Training Workshops titled STORMCUP (Short Training On Research in Marine Cyanobacterial Utilization Programme), for two weeks generally in the month of February and gives them practical training on basic and applied research using Marine Cyanobacteria., An International Symposium on Cyanobacterial Biotechnology was organized by NFMC during September 18 - 21, 1996, in which around 150 scientists from 17 countries participated. The proceedings of the symposium has been published. See about it in the publications section. NFMC (National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria) is an Infrastructural Research facility established by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India as one of nearly a dozen such Facilities in different parts of India. This Facility is relatively recent as it started only in the year 1991 at Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, India. The University itself is young and yet within a little over a decade of its existence, has made rapid strides in different aspects of higher education and research. The pioneering work on the unique photoautotrophic, prokaryotic, mostly nitrogen fixing group of marine microbes namely cyanobacteria at this University, paved the way for the establishment of this Facility.
